Hello and welcome to White London and the A Darker Shade of Magic Blog Tour! I don’t know about you, but I am super excited for this book. Parallel universes, tricky magic, smuggler-y pirate types? I’m in.
One of my favorite things about Victoria Schwab’s books are the worlds she writes and the heaping truckloads of atmosphere she brings to them. As part of the tour, I got to ask Victoria how she sets about figuring them out and she replied:
For me, setting is a character, and I go about exploring it as such. The way a writer gets to know their protagonist and their villain, that’s how I go about getting to know my worlds. I explore. I wander the twists and turns, and try to discover the secrets.
I can’t tell you how much I love this way of thinking about your wold. I’m very much a character-driven reader so it makes sense to me that settings approached like a character in their own right would be the ones I respond to.
If you take a peek at Victoria’s ADSOM pinterest board, you get a really good sense of the vibe she was going for. White London is the brutal, murderous London (I am quite pleased with our assignment) and, judging from her pins (compiled below), super eerie.
I highly recommend checking out her Pinterest, if for no other reason, her versions of Kell, Rhys and Lila are very attractive. WHAT?
Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.
Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London – but no one speaks of that now.
Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her ‘proper adventure’.
But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped.

Red London, at least there would be magic 🙂
Thank you for the giveaway!
Vicky
I’m so excited to read this book! And I had no idea about the pinterest pages, what a great way to keep a visual map of a novel.
Hannah Davies
Hmmm…either Red or White because they both have magic. I’m leaning towards Red because I could be the reason for their fear ahahaha
nurmawati djuhawan
maybe grey london because i afraid of dark magic..
thx u 🙂
Lynn K.
White London ftw! I’d like to live dangerously now and then. 😀
Nicole
I would want to live in White London definitely. Everyone needs a bit of danger at some point.
aliya
I’ll go with White London where there’s scary magic because it feels like living on the edge.
Alexandra
On the test I ot Black London, so I think I would like to live at Red London. Thank you for the giveaway!
Babel
For the sake of fiction and adventure, I’d choose White London 😉 Great question, and post!
Cheers.
Ann
Red London! Even if the general consensus is a fear of magic, that can still change with time.
Desiree
White London!! It would be scary but way more exciting.
Koenig
I’ve been told that I am more of a Black London type… can’t wait to find out more when I read the book! Thanks for the giveaway!
Carl
I’m gonna pick White London. No magic is too boring and living in fear is a bad thing. I’ll go with scary and take my chances. Thanks.
nina
Definitey I would choose Red London 😛 yes we need magic
Tanya (Read. Run. Study.)
I want to live in a world with magic, but I’m not the most adventurous, so I would go with Red London and hope their attitudes change.
Erin
I think White London…I can deal with scary magic…maybe.
Thanks for the giveaway!!
Sana // artsy musings of a bibliophile
I took a quiz and it said Red London so I’m never leaving it. Unless Kell gives me his coat.
So excited for A Darker Shade of Magic gaaaaah.
Pili @ In Love With Handmade
Clearly either Red Magic or Grey Magic because give what I read about White London in the ADSOM sampler, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere close to those twins!!
Thank you so much for the giveaway!
Sara Strauss
Tough choice! I’ll go with White London!
~Sara
Octaviana
Oh! London! I’d live in London, no matter what kind of magic.
Seriously, I think I’d choose White London, just for the thrill, but any of the choices is good for me 🙂
raph
First choice:grey(don’t ask me why…even i don’t know the answer…o.O)
Second choice:white(come on who doesn’t want to live in a place full of magic!just imagine the excitement and wickedness of it!!!!! >w<)
Ratna
On the test, I got magic-less Grey London. I think I would stick to that. But I won’t pretend that I don’t wonder what its like to live in a world with magic…
Thanks for the giveaway 🙂
Dana
I’d want to live in Red London. The summary says the magic is “revered” there–so respected. I guess you could respect something because you fear it, but even if it’s that kind of respect, that’s something that could eventually change for the better.
Thais Pampado
It’s difficult to choose between White and Red, but I think I would rather live in Red London!
Shae/Shelver @ Shae Has Left The Room
I’m not sure. The Buzzfeed quiz says I belong in Red London, so I’d start there. And hey, being scared is no fun, but at least there’s a chance to learn!
Maraia
I haven’t read ADSOM yet, so maybe my answer will change, but I want magic, and I don’t want to be afraid of it! I’ll probably regret it, but I’m going to say White London.
Ayanami Faerudo
White London. Scary, yes, but…
Mithila
Red London probably. Or maybe White. I don’t think I can handle no magic at all, that’s so mundane.
Rebecca
definitely white London! I’m sure I’d regret my choice at some point but at least I’d live a little in the mean time!
Ashley
I’m not sure if I would choose Red London or White London, but I am leaning toward Red.
Amanda
Red London feels already like home!
bn100
maybe grey
Christine T
Red London probably, because it seems more whimsical and that’s what I prefer
Cyn @ Book Munchies
Red London, because a little magic would be nice. I probably won’t survive White London.
Nara
I’m going to say Red? Because at least then we’ll have some sort of magic, and not be ruled by murderers as in White.
Lia
I’d pick Grey London – no chance of someone using magic to hurt other there.
Marika
Red London, I love magic too much! I don’t think I’d live longer xD
Irma Jurejevčič
Red London! I need some magic in my life!
Anonymous
WHITE LONDON. I’m all up for scary. 😉
Joy @ Thoughts By J
Thanks for sharing the awesomeness that is this book! I think I would pick Red London because I’d still like to know about evil magic and be prepared for it 😀
Shelumiel
I’ve heard so many good stuff about this and I cannot wait to get ahold of it!
Alyssa
WHITE LONDON. WHITE LONDON ALL THE WAY. Because honestly, MAGIC.
(However, I am intrigued by the last stop that says ‘only time will tell’. I’m going to guess it’s a Black London, because that’s a colour on the ADSOM cover.)
Sharon
I have not yet read any of Victoria’s books but I have seen some of her youtube videos and she seems like such an awesome person!
Andye @ReadingTeen
Ooooh! White London! And they can all be afraid of ME!!
Becca
Red London for sure!
Georgette
Definitely White London…I like a challenge! LOL

Red London! Just to see what’s it like to live in the world where magic exists.
Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂
Emma @ Miss Print
I like the idea of Red London but Grey seems a lot safer!
Emma A
I took the quiz and got Grey London, but even independently, I think I would rather live in a place without magic so that I wouldn’t feel as though there is an extra layer of danger in the world.
Amanda
White London! I’d take my chances.
La La in the Library
Red London. It’s good to have something to be afraid of if it is awesome! Thanks for this stellar giveaway contest. 🙂
