Today I’m super excited to have Ashley Poston on the blog today, revealing her the cover of her newest novel We Own the Night. It was designed by the awesome Jenny from Supernatural Snark. I’ve been a fan of Jenny’s work in the past (seriously, just check out her work!), and I personally think she’s outdone herself with We Own the Night! If you love it when diverse YA and music makes sweet lovin’, then check out the Q&A with Ashely and the cover below, and add it to your Goodreads!
Describe We Own The Night in 5 words.
A Snarky Sleepless In Seattle.
Music plays a huge part in your novels. Tell us, what are some of your favorite bands?
I absolutely love Motion City Soundtrack. They’re one of the bands that when I have nothing else to listen to, I just put them on. Especially their third album, Even if it Kills Me. But to be honest, I’m secretly a punk-rock kid at heart, so everything Green Day, Blink-182, My Chemical Romance, Velvet Revolver, 30 Seconds to Mars, Marianas Trench, Haelstorm… If my record collection and Iggy’s record collection ever met, they’d be best friends.
What was your philosophy on crafting a diverse group of characters?
I love this question! To be honest, I never really thought twice about crafting a diverse group of characters. I like creating characters with diverse backgrounds so I can explore them and widen my own views of the world.
WE OWN THE NIGHT revolves around this absurd notion that everyone has to fit into a “mold.” Ingrid, the main character, is plus-sized and wonderfully unapologetic to who she is. She lives in small-town Nebraska. Everyone knows everyone — or at least, they think they do. One of her closest friends is genderqueer, the other a home-town boy with some dirty little secrets of his own, and the person Iggy falls for is someone she’s never met, Sleepless in Seattle-style, who helps her discover that what makes you different makes you stronger.
So I guess my philosophy is this — there are 7 billion people in the world, all different, all unique. Your characters should be the same! No mold needed!

“Happy midnight, my fellow Niteowls…”
As a candy store employee by day, and mysterious deejay “Niteowl” by night, eighteen-year-old Ingrid North is stuck between rock ‘n roll and a hard place. She can’t wait to get out of her tiny hometown of Steadfast, Nebraska (population three hundred and forty-seven) to chase her dreams, but small-town troubles keep getting in the way. She can’t abandon her grandmother with Alzheimer’s, or her best friend Micah–who she may or may not be in love with.
But for one hour each Saturday, she escapes all of that. On air, she isn’t timid, ugly-sweater-wearing Ingrid North. She’s the funny and daring Niteowl. Every boy’s manic pixie dream girl. Fearless. And there is one caller in particular– Dark and Brooding–whose raspy laugh and snarky humor is just sexy enough to take her mind off Micah. Not that she’s in love with Micah or anything. Cause she’s not.
As her grandmother slips further away and Micah begins dating a Mean-Girls-worthy nightmare, Ingrid runs to the mysterious Dark and Brooding as a disembodied voice to lean on, only to fall down a rabbit hole of punk rockstars, tabloid headlines, and kisses that taste like bubble tea. But the real-life man behind the voice could be surprising in all the right, and wrong, ways.
And she just might find that her real life begins when Niteowl goes off the air.

I like pretty much all the bands Ashley mentioned and I’m always on the lookout for music-related YA (bonus points for diversity and Adventure Time gifs!)!

Ooh, I remember hearing about this book getting it’s cover reveal from Twitter for the past few days! I’m finally checking it out and I’m not disappointed. I’ve finally found the third part of my trinity for a future blog post.
I love Marianas Trench and 30 Seconds To Mars! I also liked My Chemical Romance in high school! I love music.
Anyway! I love that We Own The Night is sort of like Sleepless In Seattle because although I’ve never seen it (in full), I kind of already love it. I love plus-sized characters in fiction and a music background and this just sounds so so so lovely! The characters sound fantastic. I can’t wait to read this. Thanks for the giveaway! I’ll have to think about pre-ordering this one for sure. 🙂
