Yesssss, we saw the dress long before we got to see anything else.
Stephanie Sinclair:
RIGHT!
Let’s get on it!
Meagan Spooner:
The very first thing we saw of the cover was a picture of the custom-made dress.
Kat Kennedy:
So what was the process of getting your cover like?
Meagan Spooner:
Well, after we saw the dress picture, we got to see a couple of behind-the-scenes type pictures from the shoot itself. There’s a great shot of “Lilac” standing on this ladder, pouting, while long-suffering “Tarver” holds the edge of her dress. And we were like “….nailed it!”
Amie Kaufman:
Yup, Even the models’ attitudes matched the characters.
Kat Kennedy:
Hahah!
Wow, really?
Meagan Spooner:
We’d seen an early comp with stand-in stock photos, but that was the first we saw of the models who’d actually be on the cover, so that was super exciting.
Kat Kennedy:
I think it’s great you guys had an actual photo shoot for your cover! Instead of just having images flogged off deviant art.
Stephanie Sinclair:
Nice! Did you have any input with the design?
Amie Kaufman:
Our editors were tweeting from the shoot. And we were running around and staring at the pics like idiots, and stroking twitter a little. My preciousssssss.
Kat Kennedy:
I can totally imagine!
And yeah, how much input did you get?
Were you all demandy pants about it?
Meagan Spooner:
We got pretty lucky in that we did get asked for our input, and we got to weigh in after we saw the various comps. We loved the concept from the very beginning, and the execution was dead on. Here and there we had suggestions, and they’ve been absolutely amazing about taking our thoughts on board and running with them.
Amie Kaufman:
Whitney, our designer, is incredibly talented, and we really lucked out there–we haven’t had to fight about anything, cover-wise!
Kat Kennedy:
Awesome!
Amie Kaufman:
Meg’s totally right. It’s basically been a giant love-fest from the start. They had a concept we adored, and they were so consultative and thoughtful. Nothing but love, here. Can’t even make a joke about that.
Kat Kennedy:
You said this matches the personality of the characters – how so?
Amie Kaufman:
Lilac’s taking up a heap of room 😉
Kat Kennedy:
Bwhahah!
I like that.
Meagan Spooner:
Hah! Yes. Lilac and her dress are the focus, which is how she likes it. She’s a spoiled little socialite at the beginning–or, at least, that’s how she prefers to be seen.
Amie Kaufman:
We were expecting a dress for her from day one, because that’s what she’s wearing in the book — the girl gets honest-to-God shipwrecked in a ridiculously impractical dress.
Stephanie Sinclair:
Ohhh, I’m liking where this is going.
Meagan Spooner:
And thousand-dollar shoes.
Kat Kennedy:
Tarver looks actionman-like
Is he Mr Save the Day?
Amie Kaufman:
Tarver’s a decorated war hero, but he doesn’t think there was anything heroic about what he did — from his end it involved a lot of mud, a lot of blood and too many people dead. Still, people who were far away from the action gave him medals for it.
Kat Kennedy:
I like that.
Amie Kaufman:
Lilac is NOT his choice of shipwreck companion, safe to say — but equally safe to say that he’s not the only one in that duo that does a little life saving. Without Lilac, he wouldn’t even make it off the ship alive.
Stephanie Sinclair:
I’m really excited to read this book now! Too many teasers. *withers away*
Kat Kennedy:
Wow – I like that!
I’m really into this dynamic!
Meagan Spooner:
Neither of them would be alive without the other. They start off absolutely loathing each other, but beholden to each other in a really humiliating way.
Amie Kaufman:
Just because he’s a soldier and she’s a socialite, that definitely doesn’t mean she’s a damsel in distress. We like playing with stereotypes. And breaking them. And then that star guy can sweep them into a bucket for us.
Kat Kennedy:
LOL. When can we have this book again?

Meagan Spooner:

Interesting cover, at first I thought, oh wow, another dress cover, but the story seems to be not so cliche, so… yeah, interesting. Although now I’m thinking about how the story would’ve been if the gender roles were switched: her being the decorated soldier, and him the pampered socialite. Hmmm…
