Kate Upton Is Up For The New Harry Potter Flick
So, going to freely admit I had no idea Kate Upton was an actor type person. Maybe it’s only that I’ve seen her in pictures? In any case, somehow she’s on the shortlist to star in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
According to multiple sources, Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, Lili Simmons, and Alison Sudol are up for Tina while Kate Upton, Katherine Waterston, and Elizabeth Debicki are testing for Queenie.
Though she wouldn’t be playing Tina, Redmayne’s love interest, Second Lead Female Actor In a Harry Potter Movie would be a surprising role for Upton.
No joke.
Jay Kristoff Looks Forward To Feeding Off Our Tears
Young Adult Writer (and bitter tear sipper) Jay Kristoff announced some big news from his website last week regarding his plans going forward from the Illuminae series:
You might remember late last year I announced I’d sold a new fantasy trilogy to the awesome folks at St Martin’s Press/Thomas Dunne Books. Well, I’ve been slaving like a tall, caffeine-fueled grinder monkey (minus the cute jacket and little hat) in between working on ILLUMINAE and ILLUMINAE 2, and at last, I can announce some details!
First, title!
So this new series is set in a world that’s part of a trinary star system, and having three suns constantly wheeling across the sky means the land only gets actual, legit nighttime once every three years. Which means my heroine’s ability to control darkness isn’t all that useful, but hells, grrl, you’re in a Kristoff novel – your life isn’t supposed to be easy.
Here’s the synopsis:
In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.
Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.
Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. Treachery and trials await her with the Church’s halls, and to fail is to die. But if she survives to initiation, Mia will be inducted among the chosen of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the only thing she desires.
Revenge.
The series comes out next spring/summer. I look forward to wanting to die over and over.
Because You Can Never Get Enough FSOG
If you’re like me, you FREAKING THRIVE on Fifty Shades of Grey news. You scour the internet for it, wishing for just one more tidbit. ahahahahahaha Couldn’t even keep that going for three sentences. No, seriously guys, there is actually going to be another book in this series. But wait, there’s a twist!
Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James announced Monday that she will publish a new version of her bestselling novel from S&M-happy billionaire Christian Grey’s point of view. Fans won’t have long to wait for Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian—the book comes out on June 18, the character’s birthday.
June 18th, as in THIS year??? How in the heck did the lady keep this under her hat so long?
According to a press release, the opening page of Grey reads: “This book is dedicated to those readers who asked… and asked… and asked… and asked for this.”
“Christian is a complex character,” James said, “and readers have always been fascinated by his desires and motivations, and his troubled past. Also, as anyone who has ever been in a relationship knows, there are two sides to every story. It’s been a great pleasure to return to my happy place—writing, being with Christian and Ana in their universe, and working with the fantastic team at Vintage.”
If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be in my sobbing corner, contemplating the fate of the known universe.
Pirating Gets A Cannon Blast From The UK High Court
As in days of old, England is going pirate hunting, only this time, she isn’t looking for ships and pirate flags:
The High Court has today granted The Publishers Association’s application under Section 97A of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 for a blocking order against the main UK ISPs. The order applies to 7 websites which have been found to contain substantial amounts of infringing content. Within 10 working days BT, Virgin Media, Sky, TalkTalk and EE will be required to block customer access to these sites.
These sites, all based overseas, have been infringing copyright on a massive scale. Investigations undertaken by The PA found that over 80% of the material available on the sites (and in some cases over 90%) infringes copyright.
Too bad for you illegal content downloaders, I guess.
All Male ‘Women in Comics’ Panel??
When I go to a conference and see a panel called “Women In Comics” I tend to assume that it’s going to be about women, for women, and most importantly, feature women panelists. Imagine the surprise of the Denver ComicCon attendees who went to said panel and found that ALL THREE OF THE PANELISTS were male. You read that right.
When comic fans attended the Women in Comics panel at DCC this weekend, some of them were surprised to see that all three panelists were men.
https://twitter.com/GeekChristy/status/602172845519540224
Yeah, no joke! (I mean, it wasn’t a joke, right?) But the tweets didn’t end there.
As the panel proceeded, she tweeted that the all male panel gave a “lecture” on early female characters in comics “in relation to men.”
https://twitter.com/GeekChristy/status/602182502329909248
But I’m sure there was a super great good awesome reason that ALL THREE PANELISTS on the “Women In Comics” panel were mens, right?
In an email response to Comics Alliance, the representative of DCC, Jason Jansky of DStreet PR defended the convention, saying that the panel was one “that took an historical view of women characters in comic books rather than the current role of women creators in the industry or diversity in comics — of which DCC has many with appropriately diverse panels.”
Nah, I don’t think so. Try again?
https://twitter.com/GeekChristy/status/602184876268261378
You’ve got to be kidding me. Or as The Mary Sue so aptly points out:
How it could be that someone like Kevin Robinette, who’s an expert on the history of women in comics “couldn’t find any” women who could speak knowledgeably on the topic alongside him? Especially since Trina Robbins, a comics historian, creator, and expert on women in comics herself, was attending DCC and was on other panels. We wanted to know if any attempt had actually been made and women weren’t available? Or if they just couldn’t think of whom to ask?
This was the stunning reply:
The session was never intended to be a staging of current female comics creators, and the panel description clearly indicated that it was a scholarly presentation…
We at DCC realize that a quick read of the title could be misinterpreted to indicate that it might have women creators on the panel, but the description or sitting in the panel room for five minutes would clearly indicate that Mr. Robinette’s intention was not to presume to speak for the perspective of current women creators, but to present an historical retrospective.
A historical retrospective on WOMEN creators and characters that doesn’t include a single WOMAN’S viewpoint??? I’ll let Wonder Woman do my talking for me.
Cassandra Clare chased off twitter, by Kat Kennedy
Cassandra Clare left twitter for what is expected to be a leave of absence from the popular networking site after the fandom erupted into a shitstorm and tried to drag her into it.
We’ll try to relate, briefly, what happened as best we can. Two fans of Clare’s work apparently got to read the script for the new upcoming TV show and found it problematic. They went public with their dissatisfaction at what they saw as troublesome elements and things WENT TO SHIT. Other fans reacted uproariously and some sent threats and harassed the fans and their defenders. The fandom began consuming itself like some kind of Ouroboros of self-fuckery.
People tried to drag Cassandra Clare into the middle of it, asking her to pick sides and berate fans on the other side, like she was their fucking mum! But good ol’ CC was having none of that! Oh no siree. In a widely circulated tweet, Cassandra Clare left twitter, refusing to mediate.
https://twitter.com/cassieclare/status/605095456314671104
Rumour has it, as a result of this decision, Cassandra Clare was hacked and her DM’s made public but as of this moment we can not confirm nor deny. Mostly because it just seems like a rumour. BUT WOULDN’T IT BE JUICY IF IT WERE TRUE?!

I thought the big kerfuffle in the Clare fandom was over something called #HotHodge…can you all explain that ? I get being passionate about something, but these fans are taking it too far…the show isn’t even out yet and TV shows are always getting re-tooled.
Kate Copeseeley
I’ll be honest, Kat wrote that story. I have no idea what’s going on in CC’s world.
If it were me, though, I would totally wait until the show was out for a couple of episodes before I freaked out about it.
Georgette
TV shows are TV shows for a reason.
Same reason that books are books.
I’m not a fan of CC at all (Culture Club, yes. Cassandra Clare, no), but the fans really need to chill their grill.
As for 50 Shades of Lame, it never ends. Never ends. Never ends. I will be weeping internally every time one of my customers buys that crap.
BEA- coming back to Chicago next year. I CAN’T WAIT!
Kate Copeseeley
You can come over to my sobbing corner anytime!
Kristin @ Simply Bookish Things
The whole uproar about the ShadowhunterTV’s script is absolutely disgusting, the fans really need to chill out and wait till they have actually watched an episode or two. It’s so dissapointing how some people react to things like this 🙁 Unfortunately that is the negative thing about fandoms.
Kate Copeseeley
I’m not in that particular fandom, but I watch this show called The 100 where there were two rival ships for a while and holy COW did people get in an uproar about it. smh.
Natalie Monroe
I’m hoping E.L. James pulls a Midnight Sun and doesn’t release it. Oh, the humanity!
Kate Copeseeley
I think you’re out of luck on that one. Sorry! The good news is, there will be plenty of funny and snarky reviews to read! 🙂
Vanessa
E.L. James and her new book seriously make me lose more faith in humanity. I hope something bad happens and it doesn’t get released (and I can’t believe it’s so soon!). Also, I’m going to look for Jay Kristoff’s books. You seem to love that author.
Kate Copeseeley
I really love Jay Kristoff. He’s a cool guy AND his first series (which is the only one that I’ve read) was really great. Very imaginative and a kick butt female lead, which I always appreciate.
Beth W
Making me glad, again, that I generally avoid Twitter. (I was not at BEA either).
And yeah, we can’t have a female perspective on the history of women in comics, because…we’re afraid it’ll offer insider perspective? I don’t understand this industry. At all.
Kate Copeseeley
I don’t avoid twitter, but I DEFINITELY avoid twitter drama like the plague!
I’m really disappointed in the Denver Comic Con. They are completely unapologetic, too. It’s like they don’t even SEE the issue. I’m not against having a guy LEAD the talk, necessarily. But to not have a SINGLE female panelist? tsk tsk.
Caitlin
It made me so sad to see all the mess over the shadowhunter TV show, I think Cassandra Clare definitely done the right thing by keeping out of it. It’s ridiculous that people are expecting her to fix this when she had no part in it in the first place! I can’t even count the number of times she’s tweeted out saying that anything to do with the show isn’t under her control, telling people where to direct their questions if they want an actual response.
I can’t get over how much shit has went down because of the show, when no one’s even seen a finalised clip from it yet! People need to chill the frick out.
Credoroza
Re.: FSoG
I do not believe this is new material. I have a sneaking suspicion this is a book of the outtakes and extended scenes that were done for the Fandom Causes back when she was still posting the story as MoTU.
Now if that’s true, charging 7.99 is just wrong. Because if you donated to any of the many Causes that she contributed too, you already have this “new material” and obviously, not so new.
And if she really wanted to give her loyal and loving fans what they have been clamoring for, then she wouldn’t be posting such a high price. There are many well known authors who do these type of alternate POV’s or offer novellas and they most certainly do not jack the price like that and they are always actual new material.
It’s a shame if this was done to hype up the next movie. Another suspicion of mine.
Nhi
Man, what I wouldn’t give to have all the $$$ to fly across the USA just to attend BEA and BookCon every year. Or find someone who has successfully invented teleportation.
And I’m not going to lie, I have no idea what is going on with the CoB movies and the current shit storm (why am I always the last to know these things?), but hearing this news is both terrifying and warms my heart. Maybe it’s because of my general disdain for the TMI series and Clare herself, but wow… talk about a rabid fandom ready to cannibalize each other at the drop of a hat.
Frannie Pan @ Frannie in the Pages
I am literally falling in love with Jay Kristoff’s stories and writing. Whatever he writes, I’m IN.
