Charlaine Harris Gets Another Series

Although I’m not a fan of Harris’ writing, per se, I greatly enjoyed True Blood (mostly because of all the shirtless Alcide scenes), so this has gotten me excited. Of course, I’ll be hoping for more shirtless men, ngl.

NBC is going back to True Blood author Charlaine Harris for another drama.

With rookie Midnight, Texas — based on Harris’ book trilogy — still on the bench and awaiting a premiere date at the network, NBC has handed out a pilot order to Redliners.

Redliners is based on the best-selling author’s short stories and is described as a high-octane drama that mixes humor, romance and espionage. It centers on a pair of former operatives who get reactivated and drawn into a larger conspiracy while attempting to maintain their undercover lives.

Kelly Sue DeConnick and Shaun Cassidy (Emerald City) will pen the script and executive produce the Universal Television drama. David Janollari, an executive producer on Midnight, Texas, will extend his relationship with Harris and serve in the same capacity on Redliners via his overall deal with UTV.

Just a reminder…

What was I writing?  What was the story about?

A.J. Jacobs Book Gets Pilot

Boy this could be hilarious, really, if you do it right. There are some really weird commands in the bible. Not sure how a religious show will work out on mainstream TV though. The last one I remember is Touched By An Angel and that was… 14 years ago. O.O

CBS is ready to explore living life by the book.

The network on Tuesday handed out a pilot order to comedy Living Biblically, based on the book The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs.

The project centers on a modern-day man who, at a crossroads in his life, decides to live life according to the Bible.

The comedy was developed as a single-camera and will now be shot as a multicamera. It is written by Patrick Walsh (2 Broke Girls) and executive produced by The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki as part of his overall deal with Big Bang producers Warner Bros. Television. The project landed at CBS in September following a multiple-network bidding war.

Walsh will exec produce alongside Galecki and his Alcide Bava Productions banner. Spencer Medof and Alcide Bava vp Andrew Haas, the latter of whom brought the book to Galecki’s company and WBTV, also will exec produce.

Kate McKinnon Will Be Miss Frizz

My kids are going to be ALL KINDS OF EXCITED about this. They freaking love The Magic School Bus.

Ms. Frizzle is back — sort of!

PEOPLE can exclusively reveal that Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon will be starring in Netflix’s revival of The Magic School Bus: Rides Again as the voice of teacher Fiona Frizzle.

Fiona, who is the sister to the the original Ms. Valerie Frizzle, will bring the same comedy mayhem and science education as the original educational ’90s series.

The TV series — which premiered on Sept.10, 1994, is based on the book series of the same name by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen.

This can’t come soon enough, obviously.

Novel Adaption of The Lumberjanes

NO FREAKING WAY!!!! My son and I are huge fans of this comic series and the idea that they will be MG novels now. IS. SO. EXCITING!!

Lumberjanes, the bestselling teen girl focused comics series, is crossing over to prose. This fall Abrams children’s imprint Amulet Books will launch an original, illustrated middle-grade fiction Lumberjanes series based on the comics published by BOOM! Studios.

The first novel will be published in October 2017 with an anticipated first printing of 150,000 copies. Publisher Andrew Smith and editor-in-chief Susan van Metre have acquired world rights for the series, through negotiations with Filip Sablik, president of publishing and marketing at BOOM! Studios.

Mariko Tamaki, co-creator with her cousin Jillian of This One Summer and the current writer of the Tomb Raider comics series for Dark Horse, will write the novels. Brooke Allen, who was one of the original Lumberjanes artists, will provide black-and-white illustrations.

Lumberjanes stars five girls at summer camp who solve supernatural mysteries and sometimes go toe-to-toe with strange creatures. The comics, which are noted for their exuberant humor, girl-centered stories and diverse cast of characters, were created by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson, and Brooke Allen, and published by BOOM! Studios starting in 2014. More than 800,000 copies of the comics have been sold worldwide, and the series has drawn a devoted group of fans and has won several Eisner and Harvey awards and a GLAAD Media Award.

Buying all of them. All.

Rainbow Rowell Fake News

So Rainbow Rowell had an interesting Tuesday.  It seems that a radio talk show host named Lars Larson decided to post an excerpt of Eleanor & Park on his Facebook page as an example of why the book should be banned.  Oh yeah, except it wasn’t.

This from Sirius Kat Girl’s blog:

This man, Lars Larson, had shared a screenshot of a mature scene purportedly written by Rainbow. A Google search of one line of the scene published on this man’s page turned up nothing more than a link to a website for fan fiction. The author herself commented on the post, asking that it be removed because the information provided alongside the image was false. The post, which called for Eleanor & Park to be removed from middle and high school libraries, was eventually taken down, but not until it had been up for six hours and shared by more than 300 people.

The reason I mention this story in the context of the authority framework is that Lars Larson’s name has a blue check next to it. Although this only means that the account truly belongs to the public figure named, many casual consumers of information may take this to mean that the man is an authority and that his word may be taken as is without question. The fact that he is a radio show host, whose show is described as “Honestly Provocative Talk Journalism,” lends to the notion of his credibility. The majority of the comments on Larson’s post calling for the censorship of Rainbow’s novel were in full support of him, despite the fact that his post was inaccurate. Had they performed their own research, rather than relying on a supposed authority, they would have realized this inaccuracy.

As Kat reported, the post was eventually taken down:

And true to her awesome self, Rowell was able to keep her sense of humor about the whole thing:

SUPER excited for the Anne of Green Gables remake — I hope they do a good job. Very much less excited for 13 Reasons Why. I think the book had misunderstandings about suicide and was kind of strange — not sure how that will translate onscreen, but I know that a lot of others like it, so we’ll see how it goes.

My husband and I are ECSTATIC about Kate McKinnon as Ms. Frizzle. Perfect casting at its finest. Thanks for the rundown — I missed the Eleanor & Park drama. Craziness!
