The 100 Snags A New Cast Member

ChaiRomYou all know it’s a good day for me when I have news to share on my favorite obsession Tv Show. This week, The 100 production announced it was adding a new role:

Chai Romruen (Mako Mermaids) is set for a recurring role in the upcoming fourth season of the CW’s The 100. Romruen will play Ilan, a Grounder haunted by the horrors he committed while under Alie’s (Erica Serra) control. Romruen is best known for his role on Netflix series Mako Mermaids, which just debuted its fourth season, and he recently wrapped the feature We Were Tomorrow. He’s repped by Independent Management Company in Australia and Primary Wave Entertainment.

The Flash Adds Their Iris West

KierseyClemonsBoy, DC is making movies all over the place. I really hope they start getting some good writers/directors though, because I have not been hearing good things so far. (Go, Wonder Woman, Go!!) This time they’re making a movie about The Flash, apparently?

Kiersey Clemons will join Ezra Miller in The Flash, where she will play Iris West, the go-getter journalist friend of Flash’s alter-ego Barry Allen.

The superhero stand-alone will be a reunion for Clemons and director Rick Famuyiwa, who took over directorial duties from Seth Grahame-Smith. Clemons and Famuyiwa worked together on the 2015 Sundance standout Dope, where she starred as a lesbian tomboy drummer.

Following her breakout performance in Dope, the 22-year-old actress is proving to be one of Hollywood’s in-demand up-and-comers.

Clemons just appeared in Universal’s comedy sequel Neighbors 2 and recently was cast in Columbia’s sci-fi thriller remake Flatliners.

Daisy Ridley Cast in Chaos Walking

Pretty sure this is going to thrill Ridley fans AND Patrick Ness fans!! I know I’m excited!!!  Although, now I have another series to add to my TBR list before the movie comes out!!!! Okay, Kate. Deep breaths.  Calm down.

eyJo20z

Ridley is attached to star in Lionsgate’s adaptation of popular young adult novel “Chaos Walking” by Patrick Ness. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed the casting Thursday on the company’s earnings call with Wall Street analysts, saying that film would go into production next year

Doug Liman is signed on as director. Jamie Linden penned the most recent script with Allison Shearmur and Doug Davison producing.

“Chaos Walking: The Knife of Never Letting Go,” published in 2008 as the first book in a trilogy, is set in a dystopian world where all living creatures can hear each other’s thoughts.

The book is centered on the only boy in a town of men, who makes a startling discovery that forces him to flee with only his dog in hand. With the townspeople in pursuit, the duo stumbles upon a strange and silent girl. They set off on a white-knuckle journey in which the boy must unlearn everything he knows in order to figure out who he truly is.

So excited about this!  I mean, how cute is she??

Two New Cast Members For The Handmaid’s Tale

Max_Minghella)I have yet to read this book, but I’m sure when I do I will afterward proceed to inhale this ten episode series in one gulp. We have more casting news this week (following the announcement of Elizabeth Moss playing Offred earlier this year):

Max Minghella and Ann Dowd are joining Moss on her dystopic journey to Gilead, an imagined, futuristic United States where religious fundamentalists run a totalitarian government and women like Offred have become “handmaids” — property of male officials, forced to be their sex slaves and bear their children.

Max Minghella (The Social NetworkThe Mindy Project) will play Nick, a driver employed in the household Offred resides in, who develops an illicit relationship with the titular handmaid. Ann Dowd (Captain FantasticThe Leftovers) will play Aunt Lydia, head of the Red Center, the organization charged with indoctrinating the handmaids before they are placed in the homes of high-ranking Gilead officials.

This series premieres next year, not sure when.

Peter Rabbit Movie Casts Lead Roles

PeterRabbitWe are just all about the casting news today! Last but not least, we have Peter Rabbit, which will star two very familiar faces:

James Corden and Rose Byrne are in talks to star in a film based on Beatrix Potter’s much-loved creation Peter Rabbit.

The British actor and talk-show host will voice the titular character while the Bridesmaids and Spy star is in talks to join him. The film will be a hybrid of live action and animation and is set to be directed by Will Gluck, whose credits include Easy A and Annie.

It will be a contemporary, comedic take on the source material, focusing on the rivalry between Peter Rabbit and Mr McGregor. The character was previously brought to life in BBC show The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends.

American Gods TV Show Will Have Changes From Books

American GodsUmm… duh? It would be practically a miracle if this TV show ended up exactly like the book, amirite? But the showrunners have assured us that the changes are all good! In fact, one of them is MORE TIME FOR THE LADIES:

“In the novel,” said Fuller, Shadow Moon and Wednesday’s road trip makes the story “very much a sausage party.”

Refreshingly, this encouraged him and Green to expand on their female characters rather than stick to that particularly male-heavy emphasis. “We have such fantastic female characters,” Fuller enthused, going on to say that they very much wanted to “accordion out” those roles to enrich the story.

The show will also take more time to explore the different religious aspects it introduces:

American Gods discusses many different traditions, cultures, mythologies, and organized religions, and the show will do the same.

“People assume when you say religion, the next step will be divisive,” Fuller said. But he and Green maintained that the novel managed to discuss religion in an inclusive way, so that — in Green’s words — you can find something that appeals to you “whether you’re coming at it faithfully or agnostically.”

Fuller emphasized that they wanted to show the positive impact that faith and religion can have on both individuals and society at large, since “it’s hard not to recognize the power religion gives to people in their daily lives.”

Here is the trailer for those of you who haven’t seen it yet:

A Wrinkle In Time Makes History

A_wrinkle_in_time_digest_2007First of all, THEY’RE DOING A MOVIE OF A WRINKLE IN TIME???? HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS??? Secondly, apparently the movie is already making the news in a good way.

This week, it became clear that Ava DuVernay has passed a power-player milestone, becoming the first woman of color to direct a live-action film with a production budget over $100 million, Disney’s upcoming “A Wrinkle in Time.”

DuVernay’s adaptation of the 1964 Madeleine L’Engle novel was on a list that the California Film Commission released Tuesday of projects receiving tax incentives to shoot in the state. “A Wrinkle in Time” will bring $85 million in qualified spending to California, state officials said, and receive an incentive of $18 million, the largest since the state program expanded in 2014.

DuVernay, who directed “Selma” in 2014 and executive produced “Queen Sugar,” a series premiering on OWN Sept. 6, joins a tiny group of women live-action directors who have worked at such budget levels— Kathryn Bigelow for the 2002 movie “K-19: The Widowmaker,” and Patty Jenkins, who is directing next year’s “Wonder Woman” movie.

Among live-action directors of color, she is also in elite company, a group which includes “Star Trek Beyond” director Justin Lin, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” director Tim Story and “Fast 8” director F. Gary Gray.

As a woman of color helming a live-action studio tentpole movie, she will be in a category of one.

I love this quote from the article from poet Fernando Pessoa: “Stones in the road? I’ll save each one. Then one day I’ll build a castle.”

The movie, which stars Oprah Winfrey, will release sometime in 2017.

Books Are Good For You!

Hey, guess what, booknerds??? Turns out reading is super good for your longevity, so yay! Buy all the books!!! But seriously, how is this possible?

jus_science_jon_stewart

Researchers used data on 3,635 people over 50 participating in a larger health study who had answered questions about reading.

The scientists divided the sample into three groups: those who read no books, those who read books up to three and a half hours a week, and those who read books more than three and a half hours.

The study, in Social Science & Medicine, found that book readers tended to be female, college-educated and in higher income groups. So researchers controlled for those factors as well as age, race, self-reported health, depression, employment and marital status.

Compared with those who did not read books, those who read for up to three and a half hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die over 12 years of follow-up, and those who read more than that were 23 percent less likely to die. Book readers lived an average of almost two years longer than those who did not read at all.

Interesting. I’m pretty sure it’s because people who read are locked in their rooms, alone, rather than out doing dangerous things like skydiving and going to the grocery store. Still, I’m certain this is all legit, so if you need me, I’m gonna be curled up in my chair with a good book.

I didn’t know they were making a Maximum Ride movie! I stopped reading the series after the fourth book. 😛

  2. Jordan

I completely forgot they are making The Handmaid’s Tale into a movie! I read the book recently and really enjoyed it, and I am really interested to see how this is adapted.. should be interesting.
I’m also SO excited American Gods! It looks like they are doing so many amazing things with the book and are really taking it in the right direction. Can’t wait!

They’re making a Chaos Walking movie?!?!?! *hyperventilates*
No but seriously, Daisy Ridley is a fab actress but I don’t see her as Viola (too old). I wonder if she’s cast as another character? Or they’re aging the MCs by 5 years? Hrmm….also wonder how they’re going to concept Noise in a movie? Iiiinteresting.

AND they’re making Handmaid’s Tale into a TV series? Huh?

AND they’re making A Wrinkle in Time into a movie?! Oh man, they better do right by that one. *sideeyes the Hollywood version of scifi*

This is a seriously large chunk of book-to-screen adaptations. I am both thrilled that this will encourage more reading of great novels, and frightened this will all end up in flames (or worse, like the movie adaptation of His Dark Materials.)

  4. La Coccinelle @ The Ladybug Reads...

A Wrinkle in Time was made into a TV movie a few years back. It was shot around here, which is mostly what I remember; I saw the finished product, and it was pretty unmemorable! Hopefully, with a bigger budget, they’ll be able to do the story justice.
