Right, you can come out now, the performance bit’s over. As you may have guessed, it is the long-awaited release day of Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson, the first book in a fantastic new fantasy trilogy.

We are huge fans of this book and are quite pleased to welcome Mary here today to talk about writing a sneaky twist (Meg’s working title: How To Trick Your Readers In The Sneakiest Of The Sneaky Fashions).

I fear you're underestimating the sneakiness, sir
(Working title comes with gif because obviously)

So come along gentle reader and learn about how Mary E. Pearson will pull the rug out from under you and cause you to question everything you think about how you perceive characters and what are you doing making assumptions anyway? Go home Meg, you’re drunk. (That last bit may just be me but what can I say, I’m dramatic.)

As I got a closer look, my own attention perked up. I watched the newest arrivals step inside and search the crowded room, their eyes roaming over customers and corners . . . I sidled closer to the shadows of the alcove to watch them.

“Now that’s an interesting pair,” Gwyneth said, swishing in beside me.

I couldn’t deny they had captured my attention.

When I first started writing The Kiss of Deception I started it in third person point of view, but I realized it would be impossible for me to have the reader experience what Lia’s does, without using trickery. I didn’t want to do that. I just wanted to write the story and let readers assume what they would.

So I switched to first, but even that was still tricky for me, because I had to be careful each character, Rafe or Kaden, didn’t have any internal conversations with themselves about their backgrounds, and then when we knew by the chapter titles that the Assassin or Prince was speaking, I had to be careful about how they referred to prior scenes that only Rafe or Kaden would know.  Does that make sense?

It took several revisions to make sure I hadn’t inadvertently let the cat out of the bag.  In those revisions I also made sure that on a reread, what the guys said and did would all add up to who they really were.  Because I really wasn’t trying to trick anyone. I just wanted all of our assumptions about people to come into play, and also for readers to become invested in both characters, just as Lia was, before they found out for sure who was who.

Another challenge in writing the two male viewpoint characters was making sure Rafe and Kaden each had distinct mannerisms and voices so they weren’t confused. It was helpful that they had chapters all their own early on because that got me into their heads quickly—and I have to say it was a fun place to be ; ) I actually grew to love them both for very different reasons, no matter who or what they were.

Kiss of Deception by Mary E. PearsonIn this timeless new trilogy about love and sacrifice, a princess must find her place in a reborn world.

In a society steeped in tradition, Princess Lia’s life follows a preordained course. As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn’t—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met.

On the morning of her wedding, Lia flees to a distant village. She settles into a new life, hopeful when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deception abounds, and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—even as she finds herself falling in love.

My day could be better, but I’m not one to complain.

But this interview is awesome! I write in third but follow several PoVs in my books, including more than a few males, and being a female, I thought it would be harder to get into their heads than it really was. My male characters are just surprisingly easy to write. =)

    Thanks for the giveaway!
