As you know we are big fans of Victoria Scott’s books (and Dante), so we were incredibly excited to be a part of the Fire & Flood blog tour. We sent Kat off to seduce some answers out of Victoria and no one can resist Kat on a mission. Read on to learn about Victoria’s process and the recently released Fire & Flood.

1. Tella is amazing with a strong voice. Makes me recall someone else like that… *dante* What’s your process?
When I develop a new character’s voice, I try to think of someone who has a lot of growing to do, and I weave their weaknesses into their voice and thought patterns. I’m never going to choose the strongest of my characters to be the narrator because, quite frankly, that stronger character already has their crap figured out.

2. Did you watch a lot of The Amazing Race as “research”.
I have actually never watched an episode of The Amazing Race. Nor have I read The Maze Runner series, and my book gets compared to both. Ha!

3. You rated the book five stars on another blog. Badass. How do you feel it compared to The Collector in awesomeness?
I actually rated my story zero stars, but I gave the cover five stars. So maybe it gets a 2.5 overall? This series is extremely different from The Collector. Let’s say The Collector is swagalicious while Fire & Flood is thrillvania. Two kinds of awesome. Separate but equal.

4. There is a dude. He’s giving me feels. Describe what it was like writing him but you have to do it in doge meme talk.
You must be referring to Guy Chambers.

5. How well do you think you’d survive if you were a contender?
I wouldn’t. I’d find a place in the leaves and wait for death.

Fire & Flood

Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble

A modern day thrill ride, where a teen girl and her animal companion must participate in a breathtaking race to save her brother’s life—and her own.

Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can’t determine what’s wrong, her parents decide to move to Montana for the fresh air. She’s lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she’s helpless to change anything.

Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. It’s an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother’s illness. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there’s no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race.

The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can’t trust the allies she makes. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place?

I WANT TO READ THIS SO BAD. I haven’t read The Collector (I also want to read that badly, though), but I hear it getting compared to a lot of epic books and it just sounds brilliant. Plus: jungles. I love thriller/fantastical books set in jungles. (I used to live around a lot of rainforests.) Congrats on the release, Victoria Scott!!

I am so with Victoria on the last question! I’d just make a cute little hut and chill until someone found me and let me die. Also love this answer: “The Collector is swagalicious while Fire & Flood is thrillvania.” Haha it makes me want to read both right now because thrillvania sounds pretty solid, and who doesn’t love swagalicious things?? Fantastic interview, ladies! <33
