Apple BooksDOJ Gives Apple its Slap on the Wrist

After a court found that Apple had led ebook price fixing with it’s competitors to unnaturally inflate the price of books, the DOJ has set down a remedy plan to try and ensure it doesn’t happen again with Apples other products.  This plan will require court’s approval.

It would stop Apple from “entering into agreements with suppliers of e-books, music, movies, television shows or other content that are likely to increase the prices at which Apple’s competitor retailers may sell that content.”

In addition, the agreement would force Apple would have to allow eBook retailers like Barnes & Noble or Amazon “to provide links from their e-book apps to their e-bookstores” within apps for Apple devices–blocking one of Apple’s key competitive practices on the iPad and iPhone.

Finally, the DOJ proposes that Apple would install an officer inside the company.

A Law Professor came out this week to say that all this is really unnecessary and that the damage award would probably be enough.

The bans and the monitor are probably unnecessary. Apple will have to pay damages, unless it is successful on appeal. The damage awards should serve as a sufficient deterrent. The monitor, an increasingly popular remedy, converts the Sherman Act into a regulatory statute, which is not its original purpose.

Yup, because those fines that companies get for bad behaviour has totally been enough in the past as a deterrent for companies to stop their bad behaviour.  I’ve really noticed that with Exxon.

J.K. RowlingJ.K. Rowling Gets Damages Paid to Her

So after Rowling’s pseudonym got leaked by a douche lawyer and his wife’s douchier friend, it seemed like a good time to get some recompense.  Rowling, who had been legitimately enjoying her brief stint as Robert Galbraith.  She was enjoying the anonymity and opportunity to grow as a writer without the immense pressure of the world watching on.

Then a lawyer for her entertainment firm decided to try and impress his wife’s best friend, who then immediately went and tweeted a journalist the tip.

Rowling’s solicitor told Mr Justice Tugendhat that Russells had contacted the writer’s agent after the story was published, revealing it was Mr Gossage who had divulged the confidential information to Ms Callegari.

Ms Callegari then revealed the information in the course of a Twitter exchange with a journalist.

The court heard Rowling had been “left dismayed and distressed by such a fundamental betrayal of trust”.

Mr Gossage, Ms Callegari and Russells all apologised and the firm agreed to pay the author’s legal costs.

It also agreed to make a payment, by way of damages, to the Soldiers’ Charity, formerly known as the Army Benevolent Fund.

Well, that’s Rowling for you.  She takes the money awarded to her and gives it to charity.  I want to start a religion for this woman.

Artemis FowlArtemis Fowl Coming to Screens

Confession time – I have no idea what Artemis Fowl is.  Never read it, no clue, never even picked up a book.  BUT some of this fanart looks freakin’ amazing.  I wants it. And, coincidentally, it too is coming to the big screen!  It is likely that, within a few years, everything you’ve ever read will have been adapted for movies or TVs.

The live-action feature will be based on the first and second installments in Disney Publishing Worldwide’s best-selling children’s fiction series by author Eoin Colfer. The screenplay is being written by Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix). Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal will executive produce the project.

The 5th WaveThe Fifth Wave is Coming!  Repent All Ye Haters!

The Blood-Thirsty YA Book to Movie Converting Producer Gods have heard my pleas and are translating The Fifth Wave into a movie.  So, people like Stephanie who didn’t appreciate the brilliance of one of my favourite YA novels, will have to put up with me squeeing for just a little longer.

Columbia Pictures has tapped Susannah Grant to adapt the YA sci-fi novel The 5th Wave.

Grant, who was nominated for an Oscar for her Erin Brockovich screenplay and is one of the studio’s go-to script doctors for high-profile projects, will tackle Rick Yancey’s first installment in a planned trilogy. The book, which was published May 7, has drawn comparisons to The Hunger Games because of its themes of teen romance set against the backdrop of a future in peril.

The Book ThiefThe Book Thief – It’s Coming for You

Markus Zusak’s famous book, The Book Thief, is coming to a cinema near you.  But before you fall in love with this wonderful, heart-wrenching book with it’s amazing writing and vivid characters, try to remember that Zusak is my arch-nemesis.  Every week we vie for Australian’s #1 most followed Goodreader.  Most weeks he wins, leaving me to slip into slot #2.  It’s time to bring this tyrant down and defeat him!  Despite how awesome this book is and how good the movie is looking to be, we must resist.  Do it for me, do it for book bloggers everywhere.  DO IT FOR SOCIETY.

Director Brian Percival took a big chance with Sophie Nelisse for “The Book Thief” giving the 12-year-old girl the central role in the movie adaptation of the international best seller. “She was wonderful to work with,” says Percival. “I don’t think I have ever come across such a natural talent. She’s remarkable.”

Director Brian Percival knew it was crucial to find the right actress to play Liesel Meminger, the young heroine of Markus Zusak’s best-selling novel, The Book Thief.

The Book Thief is set in WWII Germany, in a small village, where a young girl and her family hide a Jewish man from authorities.  The young girl discovers a love of stealing and reading books.

I’m going to go out on a limb and imply that Zusak probably kicks puppies occasionally.  I don’t have any evidence, mainly just a gut instinct, but surely this wild conjecture is enough to provoke you to stand with me against his reign of terror?

Elusion

Elusion Gets Movie Deal

Elusion isn’t due out until March next year, but sources say a movie deal has already been etched for the anticipated YA novel.  And Katherine Tegen books is really promoting this one.  REALLY promoting it.  I mean, who do you have to take on a world-wind adventure in a TARDIS to get this kind of pre-release press?  AND that cover!

The Synopsis for the book is this:

Soon, Elusion® will change the world and life as we know it.

A new technology called Elusion is sweeping the country. An app, visor and wristband will virtually transport you to an exotic destination where adventure can be pursued without the complications—or consequences—of real life.

Regan is an Elusion insider. Or at least she used to be. Her father invented the program, and her best friend, Patrick, heir to the tech giant Orexis, is about to release it nationwide. But ever since her father’s unexpected death, Regan can’t bear to Escape, especially since waking up from the dream means crashing back to her grim reality.

Still, when there are rumors of trouble in Elusion—accusations that it’s addictive and dangerous— Regan is determined to defend it. But the critics of Elusion come from surprising sources, including Josh, the handsome skeptic with his own personal stakes. As Regan investigates the claims, she discovers a disturbing web of secrets. She will soon have to choose between love and loyalty…a decision that will affect the lives of millions.

Suspense, thrills, and romance fuel this near-future story about the seductive nature of a perfect virtual world, and how far one girl will go to uncover the truth behind the illusions.

Hmmm. . .addictive computer program?  That’s impossible!  *Goes back to obsessively playing WOW*

According to Deadline, the book by Claudia Gabel and Cheryl Klam has been picked up for a movie adaptation by Silver Reel and FlynnPictureCo.

ObsidianObsidian Gets Movie Deal

It’s been an insanely successful couple of years for Jennifer Armentrout.  The success of her Lux series has been phenomenal, garnering her positive reviews, an excited fanbase and now a movie deal to bring the popular Entangled Press title to the big screen.

Sierra Pictures will finance and produce the film adaptation of Obsidian, about a 17-year-old girl who discovers that her neighbor is anything but the normal guy next door.

Sierra’s Nick Meyer and Marc Schaberg will executive produce the movie, with Sierra/Affinity handling international sales. Sierra/Affinity senior vp of production and acquisitions Kelly McCormick and senior vp of sales Kristen Figeroid were instrumental in bringing in the property. McCormick will oversee production.

Obsidian is the story of Katy who moves to a new town and discovers that her totally hot neighbor is also a total dick.  Then she discover’s it’s because he’s an alien – though still a dick. The novel follows their journey and their adventure, dodging goverment peep’s, other aliens and trying to navigate their tenuous relationship.

I never enjoyed Artemis Fowl, I DNFed the book early on. I absolutely loved The Book Thief and The 5th Wave. I have a feeling that I’m going to cry my eyes out in November when The Book Thief is in theaters. As always, great buzzy worthy news!

Fines are totally sufficient! I mean, every company in the world becomes a complete and utter saint after being fined! It’s not like the paltry amounts aren’t just considered a tax or part of the price of doing business or anything – oh, wait.
Kat! You can’t declare war on Zusak! If the 1% don’t stand together, who will remind the 99% that they should consider themselves grateful to bask in our presence?! The 1% fights their wars with snubs, snipes, high society gossip and assassins. It is known!

Is everything being made into a film now?

  3. Riley

Hahaha, they’ve been saying there’d be an Artemis Fowl movie since the first book came out in the US at least.  There was a contest at the back of my copy of the book and the winner was supposed to get to appear in the movie.  It’s been, like, over a decade… I’m excited though, as long as they cast a good Artemis.  Child actors can be so hit or miss.

  4. heartJESS

This is always my favorite post from you guys.  I can’t believe SO many YA movies are getting optioned.

  5. ABookishHeart

Haha.  Zusak kicks puppies occasionally?  That’s just low.  But I’ll still see the movie anyways 😉

  6. catdance23

My goodness that’s a lot of movies. My theory is that YA books are where a lot of the original ideas are coming from. In Hollywood it’s YA and sequels/reboots right now. Also, if you write a good YA novel you get the YA demographic and the adult demographic.

I also loved The 5th Wave. Can’t wait to see it and The Book Thief on the big screen.

  7. irish_banana

I’m just picturing Oprah with a bunch of authors in the audience, screaming at them, “And YOU get a movie deal! And YOU get a movie deal! And so do YOU! You ALL get a movie deal!”

  8. alexiareads

Okay so I did not like the writing style of The Book Thief so I DNF’ed that one early on. I also wasn’t a huge Artemis Fowl fan either. They do have their fan base though. People who will go see these movies.

  9. NatalieAguirre

Wow! So much good movie news. Artemis Fowl is a great middle grade series. Excited it and The 5th Wave will be moviews.

  10. Mona6014

Movie deal…movie deal…movie deal…and more movie deals! I’m super excited for the 5th Wave and The Book Thief though! Been waiting ages for The Book Thief movie; they better not mess it up!

  11. saldelmaz

Ellusion sounds like Reverie in Veronica Rossi’s Under the Never Sky…but at least the story focuses on the addiction and danger aspect while Rossi’s story focuses ooutside of Reverie. I’m excited to read it none the less. Thanks for sharing the news!

Wow all these movie deals! And except for the Book Thief aren’t all these books franchises? Studio companies sure seem intent on cashing in on these franchises. Aw, I remember the good old days when they used to make movie adaptations because they were passionate about the source material instead of simply the profits they could rake in. Heck, remember when they used to make movies in general to tell stories? In recent years I can’t remember how many movies have been made that are original works from original screen plays. It’s kind of sad really, though I can’t say I’m not excited about all my favorite books coming to the screen, maybe if enough are successful they’ll start a new market, ya book adaptations.

  13. Janita

The 5th Wave and Artemis Fowl adaptations sound exciting! I’m always hesitant when it comes to movies based on books, but fingers crossed they don’t butcher these ones!

  14. ireadthebooks

The ruling in the Apple anti-trust case is good and bad. Like you said, a simple fine isn’t going to deter them.
So much love for J.K. Rowling! It seems like every time she gets money for anything, she donates it to good causes. It’s truly inspiring to see a wildly successful author making a difference with her every action.
LOL the gif @ The Fifth Wave section!
Man the Obsidian news makes me nervous … I see them trying to turn it into another Twilight, and the movie looking like another crappy paranormal action movie.

  15. Kate C.

OMG, I am SQUEEEEING over Artemis Fowl movies!  I hope they’re animated and not live-action.  You have boys, Kat, so let me tell you, very soon in your future you will be reading these books.  They are awesome and one of the best examples of an anti-hero I’ve seen in JF.  Much love for this series.
JK is freaking awesome, as usual.  Sorry her cover got blown.  That sucks.

  16. Christina @ Christina Reads YA

Lots of movie deals – I too haven’t read Artemis Fowl, but the image you posted has already got me intrigued. Lol at the 5th wave gif. Just perfect, and I actually do laugh like that quite a bit. Are you a bit disappointed that there are so many ya/children’s books being optioned? I like that it feeds back into the industry, but I almost feel like the hype over something getting optioned, which they’re obviously going for, is just less and less with *all* the options that are happening. Also, I didn’t realize Elusion was a super hyped title – its first printing looked so small on Edelweiss that I was very surprised.

  17. Shannelle C. (The Tracery of Ink)

This is a lot of movie deals that I’m so excited for.
And Kat, you haven’t read Artemis Fowl? Like what? You two were made for each other.
Why you need to read it:
    1. There’s a form of cursing
    2. Smart-ass people with the perfect amount of snark
    3. With a certain character, flatulence
    4. Crime
    5. Smart badassery, including badass fairies

  18. cynicalsapphire

DOJ: About as effective as the Appeasement plan was at stopping Hitler.
Rowling: Is TUGENDHAT a real name? If so, that needs to go in a steampunk novel immediately. I could maybe get behind that religion, so long as all worship was done through reading.
Artemis Fowl: I wonder if they’ll do an extended scene of the tunneling dwarf pooping massive amounts. Because that was fun.
The Fifth Wave: That’s one of your favorite YA novels. How cute. *WILL NOT REPENT* Also, I love you for the gif from George of the Jungle. And for other things.
The Book Thief! SO MANY TEARS WILL BE CRIED.

  19. Charlotte

WTH! Can you please tell me if you successfully started a religion for Ms Rowling?  Because I will definitely convert.  As for Artemis Fowl, how come you’ve never heard of him? Errr~ He is in a way your male version, Kat. Anyway, I’m so glad that they’re finally making a movie out of that book. YES!

  20. Heartless_Lyn

Kat, it would take less time to list out the YA books that do NOT have a movie.
Also, Rowling should sue the hell out of that asshat.
