Then Jay goes missing. Mia’s convinced that Sol knows more than he’s sharing, and to find her brother, she needs Sol’s help. But Mia must first unravel the secrets of her past if she’s going to confront her future. Because Sol’s not who Mia thought he was—and neither is she.

My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris

Revealed on: The Book Barbies

On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her bubbly stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the family’s trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits . . . right into Renaissance Firenze.

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore.

Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

Venom by Fiona Paul

Revealed on: Lindsay Writes

Cassandra Caravello is one of Renaissance Venice’s lucky elite: with elegant gowns, sparkling jewels, access to the best balls, her own lady’s maid, and a wealthy fiancé, she has everything a girl could desire. Yet ever since her parents’ death, Cassandra has felt trapped, alone in a city of water, where the dark and labyrinthine canals whisper of escape.

But when Cass stumbles upon a murdered woman—practically in her own backyard—she’s drawn into a dangerous world of secret societies, courtesans, and killers. Soon, she finds herself falling for Falco, a mysterious artist with a mischievous grin. . .and a spectacular skill for trouble. Can Cassandra find the murderer, before he finds her? And will she stay true to her fiancé, or succumb to her uncontrollable feelings for Falco?

Beauty, love, romance, and mystery weave together in a stunning novel that’s as seductive and surprising as the city of Venice itself.

Beta by Rachel Cohn

Revealed on: MTV

In a world constructed to absolute perfection, imperfection is difficult to understand—and impossible to hide.

Elysia is a clone, created in a laboratory, born as a sixteen year old girl, an empty vessel with no life experience to draw from. She is a Beta, an experimental model of teenaged clone. She was replicated from another teenage girl, who had to die in order for Elysia to be created.

Elysia’s purpose is to serve the inhabitants of Demesne, an island paradise for the wealthiest people on earth. Everything about Demesne is bioengineered for perfection. Even the air there induces a strange, euphoric high that only the island’s workers—soulless clones like Elysia—are immune to.

At first, Elysia’s new life on this island paradise is idyllic and pampered. But she soon sees that Demesne’s human residents, the most privileged people in the world who should want for nothing, yearn. And, she comes to realize that beneath its flawless exterior, there is an undercurrent of discontent amongst Demesne’s worker clones. She knows she is soulless and cannot feel and should not care—so why are overpowering sensations clouding Elysia’s mind?

If anyone discovers that Elysia isn’t the unfeeling clone she must pretend to be, she will suffer a fate too terrible to imagine. When Elysia’s one chance at happiness is ripped away from her with breathtaking cruelty, emotions she’s always had but never understood are unleashed. As rage, terror, and desire threaten to overwhelm her, Elysia must find the will to survive.

Transcendence by C. J. Omololu

Revealed on: CynJay blog

Love isn’t the only emotion to survive death . . .

When a visit to the Tower of London triggers an overwhelmingly real vision of a beheading that occurred centuries before, Cole Ryan fears she is losing her mind. A mysterious boy, Griffon Hall, comes to her aid, but the intensity of their immediate connection seems to open the floodgate of memories even wider.

As their feelings grow, Griffon reveals their common bond as members of the Akhet—an elite group of people who can remember past lives and use their collected wisdom for the good of the world. But not all Akhet are altruistic, and a rogue is after Cole to avenge their shared past. Now in extreme danger, Cole must piece together clues from many lifetimes. What she finds could ruin her chance at a future with Griffon, but risking his love may be the only way to save them both.

Full of danger, romance, and intrigue, Transcendence breathes new life into a perpetually fascinating question: What would you do with another life to live?

Veronica Roth’s Divergent takes NY Times #1 in paperback.  Congratulations.

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle is announced to be: Edith Pearlman!

Scandalous scandals

Jonathan Franzen is at it again, this time hating on Twitter.  Which in turn inspires the #JonathanFranzenhates hashtag.  It’s okay, Twitter didn’t like him much either.  But we’re all waiting on tenterhooks for Franzen to discover Pintrest.

Neil Gaiman gives excellent advice on how to seduce a writer.  It’s true.  I never realize fans want to have sex with me until I find them naked in my bed.

Apple and several major publishers are being sued for colluding to affect the price of ebooks.  Some warn that it was the only way to stem the rise of online book mongol, Amazon.  Every one agrees consumers have been screwed either way.

Lots of people have been making money off of E. L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey, Random House included.  Unfortunately, the one person who probably should be making money off it, doesn’t seem to be.  On the positive side, evil begets Evil, and some of us are glad it does.

“You are invited to a seduction. Please come to dinner on Friday night. Where the kind of clothes you would like to be seduced in.”

    I fucking love Neil Gaiman.
